Father Vincent Shindelar
1929-2010


The Chancery was notified that the Reverend Vincent J. Shindelar died Thursday, March 4, after an extended illness at Provena Cor Mariae Center in Rockford.

Father Shindelar was born on March 24, 1929 in Calmar, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Kopacek) Shindelar. Father Shindelar attended Catholic grade school in Calmar, Iowa, and then attended St. Procopius Abbey for his High School, College and Major Seminary education and formation as a Benedictine monk. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on May 3, 1956 by Bishop Martin McNamara in Joliet, Illinois.

Having received canonical exclaustration, Father Shindelar was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Rockford on April 3, 1975. He served in the diocese as an Assistant Pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Aurora, from 1971-1973, and St, Bridget Parish, Loves Park, from 1973-1976 and at St Edward Parish, Rockford, from 1976-1980. Father Shindelar was then named Pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Prophetstown, and St. Ambrose Parish, Erie, from 1980-1986, and then Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish, Savanna, from 1986-1990. Father was named the Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Tampico, from 1991-1997 and his final assignment was as Assistant Pastor for St. Edward Parish, Rockford, from 1997-1999, retiring on April 1, 1999.

Father Shindelar's Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at St. Edward Parish, Rockford, Illinois, at 11 a.m., with a Visitation in Church at 9:30 a.m. The Most Reverend Thomas G. Doran, Bishop of Rockford, will be the main celebrant and homilist and the priests of the Diocese are most welcome to concelebrate. Please bring an alb and white stole for concelebration. All arrangements are being handled by Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel, 1860 South Mulford Road, Rockford.

Father Shindelar is predeceased by his parents and brother John and is survived by his sisters Josephine Hirsman, Michigan, Monica DeLorenzo, Maryland, Agnes (Fritz) Geyer, Lisle, Illinois, his brother John (Myrna) Shindelar, Texas, sister-in-law Mary Shindelar, and many nieces and nephews.

Fr. Robert Jackson
Father Robert Jackson
The Reverend Robert Jackson died Dec. 21 after an extended illness. He had been a resident of Provena Cor Mariae Center in Rockford for the last few years. Father Jackson was born on May 3, 1927 in East Dubuque, Illinois, the son of Samuel and Mary Genevieve (Goldhagen) Jackson. Father attended grade school and high school in East Dubuque, graduating in 1945. He then attended Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa for his classical and philosophical studies, graduating in 1950; Father was assigned to St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, for his theological studies which he completed in 1954.

Father Jackson was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood by Bishop Raymond Hillinger at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Rockford, on May 22, 1954. Father Jackson served as an Assistant Pastor at St. Mary Parish, Sycamore, 1954-1956; St. Patrick Parish, Amboy, 1956-1957; St. Mary Parish, DeKalb, 1957-1958; Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Aurora, 1958-1961; St. John the Baptist Parish, Savanna, 1961-1965; and St. Joseph Parish, Harvard, 1965-1967. Father Jackson was then appointed Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Elizabeth and St. John the evangelist Parish, Hanover from 1967-1973. He was transferred to be the Pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Aurora, from 1973-1984; and his last assignment was as Chaplain for St. Joseph Hospital, Belvidere, from March, 1984 to December 1, 1999, when Father Jackson retired. In his retirement Father Jackson provided clergy assistance to several parishes in the Diocese of Rockford.

In addition to his pastoral assignments, Father Jackson obtained a Master of Arts in Theology from Aquinas Institute, Dubuque, Iowa, in 1972; and for many years served as the Diocesan Director of the Office of Ecumenism and as our representative to the General Board of the Illinois Conference of Churches.

Father is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Harry (Patricia) Lange of East Dubuque, and Mrs. Charles (Anna Mae) Chapman of Dubuque, and his brother Donald (Lucille) Jackson of East Dubuque. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother William. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque. There will be a Visitation at the Funeral Home, East Dubuque, on Sunday, Dec. 27 from 1-5 p.m., with the Rosary being prayed, and then in Church on Monday, Dec. 28 from 9-10:45 a.m.., followed by Father's Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.., with burial in East Dubuque.
