ROCKFORD, IL — Bishop David J. Malloy issued a statement today following the decision handed down by the Supreme Court of the United States in favor of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties:
“The U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision today, finding in favor of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties, is a very encouraging ruling. It upholds the very fundamental rights of religious expression and practice granted to all citizens under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
“The court ruled that closely-held corporations can have religious beliefs within the meaning of that Act, and that the Health and Human Services mandate violates the religious freedoms of those corporations.
“This limited ruling respects and reaffirms the rights of people to conduct their businesses guided by their respective religious beliefs.
“With this clarification that applies to closely-held for-profit corporations, we pray the administration will now take the appropriate steps to apply equally to religious entities as well, the principles learned today.
“It has famously been said, “the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” The U.S. Supreme Court ruling today is a reflection of that vigilance for the religious freedom of believers and all people of goodwill.”
