Bishop Malloy Welcomes New Members of the Church at Easter Vigil
Date: April 19, 2014
By: Thomas Mark
Presiding over Easter Vigil Mass, Bishop Malloy welcomed the new life of the Church, baptizing 3 and confirming 12 at the Cathedral of St. Peter Saturday night.
The Easter Vigil Mass, held on Holy Saturday evening, is among the Church’s most solemn liturgies. One of the most dramatic moments of the evening occurs when the Paschal candle is lit out front of the church and Bishop Malloy shares the light of his candle with the congregation. The entire procession then enters the darkened cathedral, each with a lone candle, illuminating the interior of the cathedral. This symbolic Mass celebrates the darkness of the crucifixion of Jesus and His death on Good Friday, shifting to the joy and light of His resurrection on Easter Sunday.
