Literacy Center Tutors needed
January 13 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Aurora’s Dominican Literacy Center has an urgent need for women volunteers to help women learn English. Training workshops for prospective tutors will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 at the center, 260 Vermont Ave. in Aurora. Lunch is included. Teaching experience is not required. Sessions are conducted in English. Tutors will meet one-on-one with adult students for 90 minutes weekly starting Jan. 22 to May. Tutors help students learn to read, write, and speak English.
Alison Brzezinski, DLC totoring coordinator, said she hopes to train 25 tutors. In addition to Brezezinski, instructors will be Sister Kaleen Ryan, DLC director; and Sister Jane Ann Beckman, citizenship training program leader.
Brezinski said tutors receive information about prospective students, including years in the U.S., previous education and how often a student speaks English at home and on a job.
Center staff members are available to assist, answer questions and resolve issues. Teaching aids available include picture dictionaries and other materials for vocabulary, writing, conversation, grammar and group activities.
