On Holy Thursday morning, Bishop David Malloy will gather with priests of the Rockford Diocese to celebrate the Chrism Mass. This Mass manifests the unity of the priests with their bishop as they renew their vows and those celebrating significant anniversaries of priesthood are recognized. At this Mass Bishop Malloy will bless the three oils used in sacraments throughout the year in all parishes and institutions—the oil of Catechumens, the Oil for the Sick and the holy Chrism. This tradition is rooted in the early Church as far back as 496. Due to the health and safety restrictions to mitigate the spread of the current pandemic, the holy oils will be received by the priests rather than four representatives from each parish.
