Bishop David J. Malloy's Statement On Illinois House Vote Redefining Marriage

Statement of Bishop David J. Malloy
on House Passage of Redefinition of Marriage Legislation (SB 10)

“Today’s vote to redefine marriage in the State of Illinois is truly grievous. Redefining marriage as being between “two persons” rather than between “one man and one woman” ignores the unique nature of this institution that is based in the complementarity of men and women and is intimately linked to the procreation and raising of children who have a right to a mother and a father. This legislation undermines this fundamental basis of human interaction and its contribution to a stable society.

“Our faith teaches us to love all our brothers and sisters made in God's image and likeness and we are to do so with respect for God's plan. The redefinition of marriage by the legislators in Illinois does not change God’s plan, nor does it change what our faith teaches.

We pray that those who stood prepared to support this legislation will also be prepared to answer for its consequences on our society.”
