In Memoriam: Rev. Daniel D. Tranel

The Chancery received word Thursday that Reverend Daniel D. Tranel died at Stonehill Franciscan Services, Dubuque, Iowa, after complications from a stroke. Father was born on September 15, 1932, in East Dubuque, Illinois, to Edward and Lucille (Kieffer) Tranel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, December 17, at 10:00AM at St. Mary Church. Bishop David J. Malloy will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00PM on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at St. Mary Church, 170 Montgomery Avenue, East Dubuque, Illinois, and from 8:45AM until Mass. Interment will be at East Dubuque Cemetery, East Dubuque, Illinois. Arrangements are being made by Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Illinois.

Survivors are Richard Tranel of Monroe, Wisconsin, Sister Norita Tranel OSF, of Dubuque, Iowa, Sister Betty Tranel, S.Sp.S, of Northfield, Illinois, Marge Jahn of East Dubuque, Iowa, Sister Jean Tranel, OP of Naples, Florida, Ned (Virginia) Tranel of Billings, Montana and Bert (Ann) Tranel of Galena, Illinois. Also sister-in-law Bonnie Tranel of Gillette, Wyoming and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Father Tranel was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Ralph, Howard, Father Dorrance and Roger and sister, Sister Danita Tranel, OSF.

Father was ordained to the priesthood on December 16, 1956, in Rome. He studied at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and North American College Seminary, Rome, Italy. Father’s assignments were as Administrator of St. Patrick Parish and Mission Parish, Maytown, Illinois, (1/1957-8/1957); Chaplain at St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, Parochial Vicar, St. Edward Parish, Rockford (9/1957-9/1958); Administrator, Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary, Menominee (9/1958-6/1959); Parochial Vicar, St. Joseph Parish, Harvard (6/1959-9/1960); Faculty, Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock (8/1961-9/1967); Chaplain, St. Dominic College, St. Charles (9/1967-10/1970); Campus Ministry, Newman Center, DeKalb (10/1970-10/1973); Pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Apple River (10/1973-10/1983), and Holy Trinity, Scales Mound (10/1973-2/1988); Pastor, St. Mary Parish, Galena (10/1983-6/2007); Administrator then Pastor, St. Michael Parish, Galena (5/1996-6/2007). Father retired from active ministry 6/2007.
