What is Natural Family Planning?

Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the scientific, natural, and moral approach to family planning that helps couples achieve or postpone pregnancy by understanding and tracking their joint fertility. NFP fosters self-knowledge, respect, and appreciation for the gift of fertility. Each method of NFP helps a couple identify times of fertility with scientific precision by observing the presence or absence of various signs of fertility. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. NFP supports God’s design for married love by fostering free, total, faithful, and fruitful communion between husband and wife.

Who can use it?

NFP is a helpful tool for all women in all phases of life to better understand a woman’s reproductive health. Women who are single, married, breastfeeding, or approaching menopause can benefit from the knowledge that is gained through learning to listen to one’s own body.
Any married couple can use NFP. A woman need not have “regular” cycles. NFP education helps couples fully understand and interpret their combined fertility so that they can discern when to postpone or try to attempt pregnancy. The key to the successful use of NFP is cooperation and communication between husband and wife – a shared commitment.

How do I learn NFP?

The best and most effective way to learn NFP is to receive instruction with a qualified teacher who has been trained and certified to teach a particular method. These individuals have received extensive education and training to become experts in this field, providing you with the best opportunity to become educated in and comfortable with a method.

"The human body includes right from the beginning the capacity of expressing love, that love in which the person becomes a gift."

– St. John Paul II

Methods of NFP

There are three main categories of NFP methods, all of which help a woman or couple determine their fertility each day based on the observations of fertility indicators or biomarkers that are present or absent in a woman’s body each day. All NFP methods help a woman identify what these signs of fertility are, how to track and records these signs, and how to determine her state of fertility based on these signs – each effective, natural, and healthy. The three main categories of NFP methods share this in common. What differs between the three main categories of NFP methods is the particular signs of fertility that a woman is observing and tracking.

Mucus Only methods observe the presence or absence of cervical mucus throughout each day. Sympto-Thermal methods observe a woman’s basal (at rest) body temperature, the presence or absence of cervical mucus, as well as other optional cervix signs. Sympto-Hormonal methods use a fertility monitor to observe hormonal changes found in a woman’s urine.
