Founded:  1963
Built:  1976
Registered Families:  2525
Church Capacity:  800
History:
In April 1962, Bishop Loras T. Lane established a new parish in the northeast portion of Rockford. The property was to be designated the new cathedral for the Diocese of Rockford and was to be called "Cathedral Parish" until a name was chosen. In the fall of 1963 the eight-grade "Cathedral School" was opened. A convent to house the School Sisters of St. Francis was completed in October 1963. The gymnasium in the school was to serve as a temporary church until the new church was constructed.

Plans for a 14 story high pyramid-like church were drawn up, but due to the high costs and Bishop Lane's untimely death in 1968, the church was not built.

Following his ordination and installation as Bishop of Rockford, Bishop Arthur J. O'Neill consulted with the priests of the Diocese and decided not to proceed with the new cathedral. St. Peter Church in Rockford was designated the cathedral for the Diocese of Rockford and the "Cathedral Parish" was named in honor of the Holy Family.

In August 1973, Bishop O'Neill and Msgr. Meilinger led ground breaking for Holy Family Church. In August 1975 mass was celebrated for the first time in the new parish church. The solemn dedication of the church by Bishop O'Neill was held on June 13, 1976. In 1979 the Harte Parish Center was built and between 1989 and 2001 there were major additions to the school, the Nazareth Adoration Chapel was constructed, and a new pipe organ was installed. The pipe organ was dedicated in 2001 by Bishop Thomas Doran and has 3,199 pipes ranging in size from 2 inches to 32 feet. The pipes were hand made in England, Germany and Holland.
